Dividing Lines

Shot:
On one of the coldest nights we have had, yeah I said it considering we have had the oddest weather I have yet to ever experience. One day below freezing the next being mid 50’s, we happen to choose a night that it was in the 30’s to stand on frozen ground next to the water to shoot the Queensboro Bridge. There was a great sunset happening just not over the bridge so I decided to turn around and shoot behind me to get the color I could see in the sky. I also was in a cool spot to notice the railing which helped divide my picture and add perspective to the camera. Sometimes even when going to shoot majestic objects like bridges who never know what you will get when you just turn around.

Good Morning Jersey City

Shot:
I get up early alot to catch Sunrise, which happens to be my favorite part of the day. It is the beginning of a fresh day, there are rarely people aside from runners and photographers out during that day outside of people working. I always shoot NYC as it has such an amazing skyline that forever changes with each different sunrise. On this morning I decided to add something different to my collection and shoot the Jersey City Skyline.

The Brooklyn Bridge Never Gets Old

Shot:
The Brooklyn Bridge is probably my favorite place to take photos. There are great views of all parts of New York as as well the bridge itself which can provide for a ton of different ways to frame images and have fun with the cables. Just a quick shot of DUMBO during a sunset I will never forget, it was so magical.

A Blue Morning

Shot:
I don’t think I need to say much about this area as it is a familiar place I like to shoot. I have been trying to change my schedule to wake up earlier to go to the gym before I start work and that hasn’t happened yet. Each day I wake up, get ready and head to work. Over the last week or so as I am driving to my office I see some amazing sunrises every day. Those amazing colors were enough to get to wake up at 5am… not for the gym but to photo the sunrise. You can see what actually motivates to wake up. This morning I got up early, had my backs packed so I can get up, shower dress and go. I got to the spot and it was a bit cloudy, there was a small sign of color in the air and I was pumped and ready to shoot. I didnt get the amazing colors I saw on other days but I did get to take an amazing shot of a super long exposure I wanted to try for a while.

The Twist

Shot:
The twisted pier is a spot that was damaged by Hurricane Sandy but is still standing strong. It has a great view of the skyline as well.

Technique:
The photo was taken at night as a regular long exposure shot. I did two different edits and layered them in Photoshop masking out the pieces I wanted from each. I also used a technique I like to brighten stuff up by adding a layer of white fill over something, dropping the opacity and changing the blending mode to overlay. I used that last technique on the dock so you can see the difference from the edits to the final.
